Biography
Barbara Holler is originally from Germany but has studied and worked in Canada for several years where she has worked in social policy and evaluation research, focusing mainly on qualitative research within the context of large-scale, long-term demonstration projects across Canada. She is currently employed as an Assistant Professor in Global Development Studies at Queen’s University, Canada.
Barbara’s research interests are in analyzing and deconstructing analytical categories utilized in the context of social policy and new poverty research. This is done cross-culturally through a wide range of research methods, with a focus on long-term ethnographic research. Furthermore, many of her research efforts have focused on exploring the development and organization of marginalized sub-cultures in public discourses on ‘welfare dependency,’ discussions on the ‘underclass,’ and marginalized segments of society, most recently in the United Kingdom.
